Use the SOS function for a serious emergency, not for a late lunch, a missed turn, or discomfort that can be handled safely by the group. Keep the device available so responders or the monitoring center can ask follow-up questions.

Build a communication plan around the messenger

Buying the device is the easy part. A useful plan includes the following steps.

1. Share a route plan

Give a trusted person your launch point, route, campsites, planned exits, group names, canoe description, vehicle information, and expected return time. Include a deadline for escalating a missed check-in. Don’t rely on that person to reconstruct your route from a string of vague location pins.

2. Test the device before the trip

Activate the plan, charge the device, update its software if appropriate, and send a test message to the person who will receive updates. Learn how to send a preset message, a custom message, a location, and an SOS. Practice outside with a clear view of the sky rather than discovering the interface during a storm.

3. Protect access and battery life

Keep the messenger where the group can reach it quickly, not buried at the bottom of a pack.
