Decide whether the straight line is still the right line

A direct crossing is usually the shortest route on a map, but not necessarily the quickest or safest route on the water. A strong headwind can make a long exposed crossing disproportionately tiring. A modest detour along a sheltered shoreline may reduce the work enough to save time overall.

Before committing to open water, look for:

  • A shoreline that blocks some wind without forcing you into shallow water, rocks, or heavy boat traffic
  • Points, islands, or bays that break the crossing into shorter stages
  • A route that lets you take the wind at a slight angle rather than directly on the bow
  • A landing or rest point where you can reassess before fatigue becomes a problem

Avoid hugging a shoreline simply because it looks sheltered. Wind can accelerate around points, funnel through gaps, or rebound from steep banks. A narrow passage may feel calm at one end and surprisingly rough at the other.
