If you carry only one paper reference, make it the route map with the launch, major forks, controlling feature, turnaround point, and possible exits marked. A perfect chart that stays buried in a dry bag is less useful than a simple map you can consult quickly.
Plan for mud, not just water
Mudflats create two separate problems: they block the route and complicate recovery. A canoe may slide through shallow water for a while, then settle abruptly onto soft mud. Stepping out can result in a difficult, unstable, or unexpectedly deep footing situation.
When the creek begins to drain, avoid assuming that a short carry will solve the problem.
