A split shaft or delaminated blade needs a more careful repair than a simple surface patch. If you can't restore the paddle’s alignment and strength, replacement is safer than trusting a cosmetic fix.

A blade may look acceptable while its internal structure has been compromised.

This is especially relevant near rocky shorelines. Landing with the blade, levering the canoe off a rock, or using the paddle as a pole can create loads that normal forward strokes don't. A carbon paddle is better suited to deliberate handling than to repeated abuse.

Carbon is also the least convenient option for many field repairs. A proper repair can require compatible reinforcement, resin, accurate shaping, and enough warmth and curing time for the materials to bond correctly. A quick wrap or surface coating may keep a damaged paddle together temporarily, but it shouldn't be assumed to restore original strength.

Cold hands can make carbon feel unpleasantly cold, and the smooth surface may become harder to control when wet. A suitable grip and hand protection help, but they add weight and may change the feel that attracted you to carbon in the first place.

No material makes a paddle indestructible.
